At the time we met, she was thirteen years old and in fifth grade, living with her grandmother and eight other children. Kanimba’s father died five years ago, her mother is unwell. She has been raised by her grandmother since early childhood. Her parents and grandmother never learned to read and write. The family is being helped out by the oldest boy, so there is always food on the table. Her favourite subject is reading, and always loves to do so whenever there is something to read. Out of her worn-out bag she takes out a neat booklet and the only pen she owns. The family hasn’t been able to pay the school fee for months.
