Alimata turned 12 in 2014. She is a sixth grade student from a family with six children. Both parents attended school. Her father is an animal dealer, her mother sells sauces at the market. They live in a rented room along with the stench of the canal nearby. Apart from the oldest girl, all the other children are educated, or are currently studying at school. One child is mentally disabled. They have food ont he table every day. She keeps her neatly written notebooks in a beach bag, and her pencils in a tin box. Alimata’s favourite subject is maths, and she plans to become a doctor. The family struggles to pay the school fees, and if manages, it arrives very late. This means there is a risk that she won’t be able to finish school.
